Upstanding view of Lake Albert and its oceanfront in Uganda

Lake Albert is big – so big that it's one of Uganda's largest lakes despite half of its area belonging to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At roughly 19 long hauls wide and 99 long hauls long, Lake Albert is one of the largest of the Rift Valley Lakes in Africa. The lake lies over a portion of the Albertine Rift, and its northern props mark the upper end of that massive monumental plate zone.

The lake's ecosystem is an important niche for a vast array of wildlife, from the large – the hippopotamus, to the small – the reedfish, one of the many species of fish with lungs as well as gills. A thriving fish population is especially important to the people living around the lake( and beyond), as roughly 30 per cent of all Uganda's fishing assiduity catch comes from Lake Albert.
